What costs what?
Only what you do away from wifi counts towards your bundle. Roughly:
- WhatsApp and email: next to nothing, even if you send a lot of messages.
- Streaming music: 40 to 150 MB per hour, depending on the quality.
- Navigation: a few MB per hour.
- Video calls: a few hundred MB per hour.
- Social media with video (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube): quickly 0.5 to 1 GB per hour.
- Series and films: 0.3 to 0.7 GB per hour in standard quality, more in HD.
So video is the big consumer. If you watch videos for half an hour every day without wifi, you are already at 8 to 15 GB a month.
Which bundle suits you?
- 1 to 5 GB: you are mostly on wifi and use WhatsApp, email and the occasional bit of internet on the go. View Sim Only from 5 GB
- 10 to 20 GB: you use social media and listen to music on the go every day. View Sim Only from 10 GB or from 20 GB
- 30 GB or more: you often watch video on the go or share your internet with your laptop. View Sim Only from 30 GB or unlimited
How to see what you use now
In your provider's app you can see how much data you used each month. Look at a few months, not just one.
On an iPhone you can also find it under Settings > Mobile Service. That counts from the last time you reset the counter, so not per month. On Android it is usually under Settings > Network & internet.
Not sure? Choose a little more
The difference between 5 and 10 GB is often just one euro a month. If your bundle runs out, many providers charge extra or slow your internet down. Here is how that works per provider.
With some providers you carry unused data over to the next month. Then a slightly bigger bundle is never wasted.
