Work out what you pay in total
A promotional price almost always applies for just a few months. After that you pay the regular price until the end of your contract. So look at what you pay over the whole term:
Total = promotional price × promotional months + regular price × remaining months + one-off costs
An example with two Sim Only plans of 24 months:
- Plan A: the first 2 months free, then €8.50 a month. Total: 22 × €8.50 = €187.00.
- Plan B: no promotion, €7.00 a month. Total: 24 × €7.00 = €168.00.
Plan A looks like the better deal, but B is €19 cheaper.
That is why Abonnement Goedkoop shows the price after the promotion by default. Want to compare the promotional prices? Switch on Show promotional prices.
Pick a contract length that suits you
Deals with a contract length of 24 months are often the sharpest. That's fine if you are staying for two years anyway. If you don't know yet, also look at deals you can cancel monthly. You sometimes pay a little more per month, but you can switch as soon as a better deal comes along.
After your contract ends, your plan continues month by month. You can then cancel it with a notice period of one month at most.
Don't take too little data
The cheapest plans often have just 1 GB. If your bundle runs out, you pay extra or your internet slows down. Choose a bundle well above that, such as 5 GB, 10 GB or 20 GB.
Also read what happens per provider when your bundle runs out.
Watch out for device credit and BKR
If you pay off your phone through your plan, that is a loan: device credit. If the credit is €250 or more, the provider checks whether you can afford it and the loan is registered with BKR, the Dutch credit registration bureau. That counts against you if you apply for a mortgage, for example.
If you don't want that, pay a larger part of the phone up front, or buy your phone separately and add a Sim Only plan.
