Why a Sim Only plan
With a Sim Only plan you only pay for your mobile plan and not for a new phone. That is why the monthly costs are often a lot lower than with a plan where you also pay off a phone.

Do you already have a good phone? Then you can simply keep using it. Also, with Sim Only you don't take out device credit. With a phone plan where the device credit is more than €250, this credit is registered with BKR, the Dutch credit registration bureau. Such a registration can affect your financial options, for example when you apply for a mortgage.
What is a Sim Only plan?
A Sim Only plan is a mobile plan without a phone. You get a SIM card or eSIM that lets you call, text and use mobile internet.

Because you don't buy a phone with the plan, you only pay for your mobile bundle. That is why a Sim Only plan is often cheaper than a plan with a new phone.
What is the difference between Sim Only and a phone plan?
With a Sim Only plan you only pay for your mobile services, such as calling, texting and internet. With a phone plan you also pay for a new phone.

Do you already have a good smartphone? Then Sim Only can be the better deal. You don't have to pay off a new phone and can keep using your current one.
How much does a Sim Only plan cost?
The price of a Sim Only plan depends on the bundle, the provider and the contract length. The amount of mobile data in particular affects the price.

A plan with little data is usually cheaper than a plan with a lot of or unlimited data.
How many GB of data do I need?
How much data you need depends on how you use your phone. For WhatsApp, email and the occasional bit of browsing you usually need less data than if you stream a lot of video, listen to music or use social media.

Do you regularly use mobile internet? Then a bigger data bundle can be worth it. If you use a great deal of data, you can also choose a plan with unlimited internet.
What is the cheapest Sim Only?
The cheapest Sim Only isn't the same for everyone. A plan with little data often has the lowest monthly price, but may be less suitable if you use a lot of mobile internet.

So don't just compare the price, but also the amount of data, call minutes, contract length, the network and the price after any promotional period.
Can I use my current phone with Sim Only?
Yes, in most cases you can simply use your current phone with a Sim Only plan. So you don't have to buy a new phone.

Do check that your phone works with the chosen provider's network and that it can use the SIM card or eSIM you need.
Can I keep my current phone number?
Yes, usually you can take your current mobile number with you when you switch to another provider. This is called number portability.

When you take out your new Sim Only plan, you can say that you want to keep your current number. The new provider then arranges the switch.
How does switching to a Sim Only plan work?
You first choose a Sim Only plan that suits you and say when ordering that you want to switch and keep your number.

The new provider then arranges the number transfer. You receive a new SIM card or activate an eSIM. As soon as the switch is complete, you can use your new plan.
Can I cancel my Sim Only plan during the contract?
That depends on the contract length and the terms of your plan. With a contract with a fixed term, you usually can't cancel early without costs.

A Sim Only plan you can cancel monthly offers more flexibility. So always check the terms of the plan before you take it out.

Why choose a SIM-only plan
